The Bon Accord Hotel

The name means "good welcome" or "good fellowship"

You will find both of these at the Bon Accord hotel in Burra South Australia

Tim is mine host and is a font of information about the history of the township.

The pub is tastefully refurbished and retains the historic aspect of days of yore.

It was established in 1875, was closed for some time but reopened following renovations in 2016

Artworks created by Tim's mother adorn all walls, and are beautiful images of the district.  There's a very welcoming fire for the chilly nights.

Call in and see Tim and his wife Sue who will direct you to the camping area

The spacious campsite at the rear of the hotel is moderately priced if you require power

Unpowered sites are lower cost, but free if you patronise the hotel.

Spotless modern unisex bathrooms with shower and toilet available all hours. These have been added solely with the traveller in mind, and some truck drivers who take up the offer of an overnight stay.

The Old Coach House at the rear of the hotel is being resorted and will be available as room accommodation in late 2024

NOTE:

**If you have a dog, please phone ahead **

You can take a walk to the township if you feel energetic, but don't miss out on exploring the area.
You will need to drive for most attractions.

If you go to the Information Centre, you can purchase the keys to enable you to visit several interesting and historic buildings which would otherwise have no access. This tour gathers very good reviews.

Burra is on the edge of the Clare Valley, so not far to travel to sample some quality wines. The hotel has a  good wine menu.

I tried the "Mad Bastard" Shiraz which was very tasty and felt appropriate for the evening.

Several films have been made in the area, amongst them Breaker Morant and The Water Diviner.

You will recognise an abandoned house as you drive into town, and wonder why it looks familiar. It is featured on the cover of the Midnight Oil album "Diesel and Dust"

Prior to the arrival of Europeans, the area was occupied by the Ngadjuri Aboriginal people.

In 1993 Burra was proclaimed a Heritage area.

There's lots to see in Burra. Plan to stay a few days.

Ok for an overnight stay if it’s not wet and for a drink. Don’t eat there, very ordinary small portions overcooked.

We have stayed here many times on our travels. The hotel is always welcoming and happy. The meals are tasty and a good size, the mixed grill is a speciality. Caravan parks with power and water are easy to back into even for novices like ourselves. The unpowered sites are level and still a beautiful spot. Thanks to Tim and the staff the toilets are always clean. The coach house will be wonderful when finished and we look forward to returning to see this happen.
