Sandfire Roadhouse
Great Northern Highway (GNH).
Port Hedland region WA

It is 605ks from Port Hedland to Broome in the far north of WA.

There are no towns or villages along this sparse stretch of highway.
Thankfully there are three roadhouses.

This is Sandfire Roadhouse which is 282k from Port Hedland and 323k from Broome.

The roadhouse is open from 7am to 7pm daily

Legend has it, that in 1970 a petrol tanker broke down in the area and the demand for fuel from passing motorists was so great that a roadhouse was eventually established.

This roadhouse was largely destroyed by fire in 2007.
Thankfully the owner rebuilt.

If nothing else, you have to drop in here and get a sausage roll.
Made on the premises by Dorothy, best in Australia.

A large campground is adjacent to the roadhouse.
Basic rooms available.

Sandfire Roadhouse is on the edge of the Great Sandy Desert so expect dust and heat, but more importantly a warm welcome and cold beer.

Ken, the owner,  is a very big supporter of the RFDS and the new tradition is to pin your hat to the rafters of the new beer garden - and of course donations in the tin

Ken has an RFDS airstrip our the back that he maintains and old Mick is a retired St. John’s ambo that still lives at the roadhouse.

Mick gave over 50 years of dedicated service to the organisation.

He still attends any injuries that come in and still coordinates the RFDS patient transfers at the airstrip in his ambulance .

From this roadhouse they actually airlift 1 or 2 Grey nomads per year out in the plane from falls or other issues they face during their travels, and Mick has a pretty well-stocked ambo cabinet on site.
